Joon Alternatives: When the Pet Game Stops Working (2026)

What Joon Gets Right

Joon (joonapp.io, by Joon App, Inc, a venture-backed startup from Y Combinator's W22 batch) is a two-app system: parents assign daily tasks called "quests" in the parent app, and kids complete them to feed and evolve a virtual pet (a "Doter") in a separate, genuinely well-made kids' game, Joon Pet Game. It leads its marketing unapologetically with neurodivergence (its own headline calls it "The behavior improvement app for kids with ADHD, ODD, Autism, or any struggling child"), and that focus shows in the details: visual routines, reminders, and a motivation loop engineered for kids who need external structure the most.

The reception backs it up. The parent app holds a 4.7★ App Store average across roughly 6,600 ratings, it's a regular in ADHD-parenting publications, and Common Sense Media's review praises how it "nicely blends on-screen adventure with offscreen chores and activities." Development is active. The parent app was last updated in September 2026. If your child connects with the pet, Joon at its best gets tasks done that nothing else could.

Why Families Go Looking for Alternatives

The reasons families leave Joon are unusually consistent across reviews, and none of them are "it's a bad app." They're the flip side of its design choices:

• It has the highest monthly price of the apps on this page. Premium is $12.99/month or $89.99/year after a 7-day trial. There is a free version with no time limit, but Joon does not say what it leaves out. For comparison: BusyKid is $4/month billed annually, Homey's premium is around $5–7/month, and S'moresUp's basic tier is free. If the game stops pulling its weight, the price is usually what turns "hmm" into "we're switching."
• The pet-game novelty fades. This is the most common complaint in parent reviews: the Doter carries the first weeks strongly, then engagement drops once the game world feels familiar. Novelty-driven motivation is a sprint, not a marathon; Joon has a custom-rewards option, but the pet game is the main motivator. When the game stops mattering to the child, most of the pull is gone.
• The parent has to stay in the loop, and the reward is screen time. By default, Joon asks a parent to review each finished quest. Parents can turn this off, but Joon advises keeping it on at the start. That review step is a feature (it keeps the system honest), but Common Sense Media puts it plainly: it "isn't right for families looking for a hands-off approach." And structurally, the payoff for finishing off-screen tasks is more time in an on-screen game. Some families are fine with that trade; for others it's exactly the loop they were trying to break.
• Kids age out at 12. Joon states its own range as ages 6–12, and the pet-game aesthetic is squarely aimed at the younger half. A system a child outgrows mid-childhood means starting over with something else anyway.
• The store privacy declarations deserve a careful read. These are the developer's own declarations to the stores as of October 16, 2026, linked so you can read them yourself. The parent app's App Store privacy label lists email address, user ID and device ID as "Data Linked to You," with the developer's advertising or marketing among the declared purposes, and its Google Play Data safety section declares device IDs shared with third parties with "Advertising or marketing" among the listed purposes.

The Honest Part: If It's Working, Keep It

If your child has ADHD, connects with the Doter, and is doing tasks they never did before, that's not a problem to solve, and nothing on this page replicates Joon's game layer. The apps below are not "Joon but cheaper"; they're different answers to the motivation question. Switching makes sense when the game has stopped doing the motivating, when the price no longer matches the value, or when you've decided you'd rather the reward for real-world effort not be more screen time. It's also worth naming: a child losing interest in the pet isn't a failure, yours or theirs. It's how novelty works, and it's the moment to move the motivation somewhere that compounds instead.

Pick by what should replace the game as the motivator:

• Points toward real family rewards, built on psychology: Twiggly (delayed gratification by design, no game world to outgrow).
• Points plus serious family scheduling, works past 12: S'moresUp.
• Chores tied to allowance: Homey (savings jars, no US banking needed) or BusyKid (real money, US-only).

Twiggly — If the Motivation Should Outlast the Novelty

Twiggly (that's us) is built on the opposite bet from Joon: instead of a game world doing the motivating, kids earn points toward rewards the family sets together (privileges, experiences, things that matter to your child), with a parent approving in one tap. The point system is deliberately designed to teach delayed gratification: points build toward a real reward over days, not a ping-and-prize loop, because delayed gratification is one of the most research-backed predictors of positive long-term outcomes. There's a growing companion too (a little twig that flourishes as effort accumulates), but it's a gentle presence, not a game your child has to keep playing: nothing to outgrow, nothing that competes with the reward for attention. Kids get their own sign-in (family code plus a PIN; no child email ever collected), and short, age-tuned parenting tips explain why everyday tasks matter for your child at their age, which is what keeps parents consistent past week two.

On the privacy side it's a clean contrast with the declarations above: no ads, no behavioural tracking, no advertising identifiers, and task photos auto-delete 30 days after approval. Built independently by a Finnish father, designed for families with children roughly 6–14.

Where it's not the right pick: Twiggly is not a game, on purpose. If your child specifically needs the pull of a video-game world and the pet loop is still working, Joon does that better than we do. It's Android-only today (iOS is on the roadmap, not in development), there's no money anywhere in it (no allowance payouts or debit card), and it isn't designed specifically around ADHD.

S'moresUp — If Your Kid Is Aging Out of Joon

S'moresUp is the feature-heavyweight of the points-based chore apps: "S'mores" points toward parent-defined rewards, approval workflows, chore rotations, photo proof and deep family scheduling, from a company started by two tech founders. Unlike Joon, it has no age-12 ceiling; it's built for the whole household, so it's the natural landing spot when the pet-game aesthetic starts reading as "for little kids" to your almost-teenager.

Where it's not the right pick: price and direction. Its pricing page announced a Premium rise to $9.99/month from July 5, 2026 (its second increase in two years), though in October 2026 the app stores still showed $7.99/month. The maker's attention is visibly shifting to a newer family super-app ("It's a Family Thing"), and the iOS app's last update was October 2025 while Android ships regularly. We cover the whole situation in our S'moresUp alternatives page.

Homey — If Chores Should Feed an Allowance

Homey (homeyapp.net, by HomeyLabs) splits tasks into unpaid responsibilities and paid jobs: responsibilities are unpaid and jobs earn money, a genuinely smart "money is earned, but membership in the family isn't billable" design. Kids split earnings into savings jars for goals, and the core loop needs no US bank account, so it works internationally. It has a limited free plan; premium is listed at $4.99/month in Homey's own Google Play description, though the App Store currently shows $6.99/month; the description appears to lag the real price.

Where it's not the right pick: the money stays mostly virtual: treat Homey as an allowance tracker, not a payment system. Reviewers also report crashes and multi-device sync problems, and younger kids can find it complex.

BusyKid — If Real Money Should Replace the Game

BusyKid swaps virtual coins for the real thing: completed chores pay a real allowance every Friday, kids allocate earnings across saving, sharing and spending, can buy real stock from $10, and spend from a prepaid Visa card. At $4/month billed annually it's the cheapest of the paid alternatives on this page (roughly a third of Joon's monthly price), and for a US family whose goal is hands-on money management it's hard to beat.

Where it's not the right pick: it's US-only in practice (its own FAQ says cards can't be shipped outside the US, and investing is US-citizens-only), money is the only motivator (there's no points-toward-privileges lane and nothing game-like at all, which is a hard landing for a kid coming from Joon), and its store privacy labels deserve a careful read before you enroll. We go through all of it in our BusyKid alternatives page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Joon free?

Partly. Joon has a free version that families can use with no time limit, but Joon does not say what the free version leaves out. Premium is $12.99/month or $89.99/year after a 7-day trial. That is the highest monthly price of the apps on this page. Prices are as shown on Joon's own website in October 2026.

Does Joon work for kids who don't have ADHD?

It can: the quest-and-pet loop is not ADHD-specific, and Joon markets itself for "any struggling child." But the app is designed and priced around kids who need the strongest possible external motivation. If your child doesn't connect with virtual pets, there is little else to fall back on (Joon has a custom-rewards option, but the pet game is the main motivator), and reviewers consistently note that engagement depends on the child caring about the pet. For neurotypical kids, a lighter system (points toward real family rewards) often does the same job with less screen time attached.

Why did my kid lose interest in Joon?

This is the most common story in Joon reviews: the pet-game novelty carries the first weeks strongly, then fades once the game world feels familiar. It isn't a flaw in your child; it's how novelty-driven motivation works. The practical question is what should replace the game as the motivator: points toward rewards your family actually cares about (Twiggly), allowance (Homey), or real money (BusyKid, US-only).

What is the best Joon alternative?

Pick by why you're leaving. If the game layer itself is the problem (novelty faded, or you'd rather off-screen tasks not be rewarded with more screen time), Twiggly uses points toward rewards the family sets together, built deliberately around delayed gratification. If your child is aging out of Joon's 6–12 design, S'moresUp handles older kids and adds deep family scheduling. If you want chores tied to money, Homey does allowance and savings jars without US banking, and BusyKid pays real allowance for US families. If Joon's game is genuinely working for your ADHD child, staying is a fine answer too.
