The Best Chore Apps for Kids in 2026: 7 Compared Honestly

How This Roundup Was Made

Most "best chore apps" lists have rotted: they still recommend apps that no longer exist, or quote prices from two hikes ago. The rule here is simple: every number was checked against the app's own store listing or website, and the check date is stamped at the top. When facts change (subscription prices change often), this page gets re-checked and re-stamped.

Apps were judged on four things that actually matter to a family: does it help a child build habits, not just tick boxes; how much work does it put on the parent; what does it do with your family's data; and is it honest about who it's not for. Nobody wins every category, which is why this is a by-need guide rather than a leaderboard.

Best Chore Apps for Kids at a Glance

Prices and store facts verified October 2026 against each app's own website and store listings; the underlying per-app pages were re-checked between October 14 and October 30, 2026. Subscription prices change frequently — check the app's own page before deciding.

S'moresUp — Best Free Starting Point

S'moresUp is the most established free-tier option here: a points-toward-rewards chore loop built by Rotation 5, a company started by two tech founders. It's also the feature-heavyweight: approval workflows, chore rotations, photo proof and deep family scheduling, with no age ceiling, so it scales from young kids to teens.

Not the right pick if you outgrow the free tier: its pricing page announced a Premium rise to $9.99/month from July 5, 2026 (its second increase in two years), though in October 2026 the app stores still showed $7.99/month. The maker's attention is visibly shifting to a newer family super-app ("It's a Family Thing"), and the iOS app's last update was October 2025 while Android ships regularly. Homey — Best for Tying Chores to Allowance

Homey (homeyapp.net, by HomeyLabs) has the smartest allowance design in the group. It splits tasks into unpaid responsibilities and paid jobs: the weekly allowance only pays out if the responsibilities got done. It's a clean "money is earned, but being part of the family isn't billable" model. Kids split earnings into savings jars for goals. You don't need a bank account: Homey tracks the money and you pay it in cash. Bank transfers exist only on paid plans, in the US. It's free for up to three family members; premium is $4.99/month on Google Play, and the App Store lists $4.99 to $6.99/month.

Not the right pick if you want money to actually move: treat Homey as an allowance tracker, not a payment system. Reviewers also report crashes and multi-device sync problems, and its many features and settings can be a lot for younger children.

Joon — Best for Kids with ADHD

Joon is the best-known game-based chore app for kids 6–12, built openly around ADHD and neurodivergence: real-life tasks ("quests") earn coins that feed a virtual pet in a genuinely well-made companion game. It holds around a 4.7★ App Store average across roughly 6,600 ratings, and for a child who needs the strongest external motivation, it gets tasks done that nothing else can.

Not the right pick if price or screen time is a concern: premium is $12.99/month or $89.99/year (the highest monthly price in the table), and Joon does not say what its free version leaves out. The pet-game novelty fades for many kids, the reward for finishing off-screen chores is more screen time, and its store privacy labels declare data used for advertising or marketing purposes. We go through all of it on our Joon alternatives page.

BusyKid — Best for Real Money and Investing

If you want chores paid in actual money, BusyKid is purpose-built for it. Completed chores pay a real Friday allowance that kids allocate across save, spend and share, with a Visa prepaid card (issued by Pathward, N.A.), the option to buy real stocks, and a QR "BusyPay" feature for entrepreneurial kids. At $48/year (i.e. $4/month, annual billing only), it's strong value for a family that wants a money mechanic.

Not the right pick if you're outside the US (cards can't ship abroad and investing is US-only), or if you don't want money to be the motivator — there's no points-and-privileges mode. Its store privacy labels also declare sharing data including for "advertising or marketing", which is worth a careful read for a kids' app. More on our BusyKid alternatives page.

Twiggly — Best for Building Lasting Habits

Twiggly (that's us) runs the familiar shape — parents assign tasks, kids earn points, points buy family-set rewards — but builds it on child psychology rather than task administration. The point system is designed to teach delayed gratification: points accumulate toward a real reward over days. Delayed gratification is one of the most research-backed predictors of positive long-term outcomes. Short, age-tuned parenting tips explain why everyday tasks matter for your child at their age, which helps parents stay consistent past week two. Consistency is what actually makes any of these systems work. Kids get their own sign-in (family code plus a PIN; no child email is ever collected), streaks and a growing garden make progress visible, and task photos auto-delete 30 days after approval. No ads, no tracking, no analytics. Built independently by a Finnish father, for families with children roughly 6–14.

Not the right pick if budget or platform rules it out: it costs money after the free trial (several apps here have free tiers), and it's Android-only today, with iOS on the roadmap but not yet in development. And in fairness, Twiggly is a young app from a small developer — every caution on this page about young apps applies to us too. What we can offer is transparency, not tenure.

Cozi — Best if You Already Live in a Family Calendar

Cozi is the category leader in family organisation (20M+ registered users, a 4.8★ iOS average across roughly 400,000 ratings). Its chores feature, added in 2025, gives each family member a checklist with recurrence and check-off. If Cozi already runs your household's calendar, meals and lists, adding chores to it costs nothing extra to learn.

Not the right pick if you want the chores to motivate: Cozi's chores are a plain checklist with no points, rewards or streaks, and there's nothing child-facing. There's no separate child login: everyone signs in to one family account with the same password, and a child needs an email address to log in. Cozi's own blog even points families to a separate app for allowance. We cover the chores angle on our Cozi alternatives for chores page.

Greenlight — Best if Money Management Is the Real Goal

Greenlight belongs on this list for honesty's sake: it's the app many parents actually mean when they say "a chore app that pays." It's a kids' debit card and money-management app, with chore and allowance tracking bolted alongside the financial features, on a Core plan at $5.99/month. If your real goal is teaching a child to earn, save and spend real money, a purpose-built finance app does that better than any chore tracker.

Not the right pick if chores and habit-building are the point — the chore side is a secondary feature, it's a paid financial product with no free tier, and it's built around money as the motivator rather than intrinsic habit-building.

One You'll Still See Recommended — Don't Install It: OurHome

Plenty of "best chore apps" roundups from 2025 and 2026 still list OurHome — the free, all-in-one chores, points, grocery and calendar app by Cape Horizon (ourhomeapp.com). It was genuinely well loved, which is why the recommendations persist. The problem: it was removed from both app stores between late 2023 and early 2024 (its last working Google Play capture is October 2023; the listing returned a 404 by January 2024) and has shipped no updates since. Its website is still online, over plain HTTP and with dead store buttons, which is what keeps fooling the roundups. An unrelated roommate app also called "OurHome" now occupies store search, so a link that looks live may not even be the app you remember. If a guide recommends OurHome, treat it as a sign the guide hasn't been fact-checked. The full story and where OurHome families are going is its own page.

How to Choose in One Minute

Skip the feature matrix and start from your reason for wanting an app at all:

• "I want the habit to actually stick." Choose for psychology and parent-consistency, not feature count — that's Twiggly's design goal.
• "Chores should earn pocket money." Homey if you want allowance without banking; BusyKid or Greenlight if you want a real card and real money (US).
• "My child has ADHD / only games hold their attention." Joon.
• "I want to spend nothing to start." S'moresUp's free tier.
• "We already organise everything in Cozi." Add Cozi's checklist and don't overthink it.

Whatever you pick, the app is scaffolding. What makes a chore routine last is a parent who stays consistent because the system makes consistency easy. That's the lens this whole roundup is written through, and the reason we built Twiggly the way we did.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best chore app for kids in 2026?

There isn't one best app; the right pick depends on what you want it to do. For building lasting habits, a psychology-first app like Twiggly. For tying chores to an allowance, Homey. For a child with ADHD, Joon. For real money and investing in the US, BusyKid. For a free start with a track record, S'moresUp. If you already run the family on Cozi, its chores feature is a simple add-on. And if money management is the actual goal, a finance app like Greenlight beats any chore app. Prices in this roundup were verified against each app's own listings in October 2026.

What is the best free chore app for kids?

Two genuinely free options stand out in October 2026. S'moresUp offers a free basic tier from an established product (premium is $7.99/month in the app stores; its pricing page announced a rise to $9.99). Cozi's free tier covers shared lists and a calendar but its chores feature has no rewards. Most other apps, Twiggly included, are trial-then-subscription rather than free. Free apps still carry a longevity risk: the category has a graveyard of once-free apps, like OurHome, that stopped being maintained and vanished.

What is the best chore app for a child with ADHD?

Joon is the app built openly around ADHD and neurodivergence. Real-life tasks ("quests") earn coins that feed a virtual pet in a genuinely well-made kids' game, and for children who need the strongest possible external motivation it gets tasks done that nothing else can. The trade-offs are that it has the highest monthly price in the comparison table ($12.99/month or $89.99/year), the pet-game novelty fades for many kids over time, and the reward for finishing off-screen chores is more screen time. Apps that reward off-screen time with off-screen privileges, rather than more screen time, suit some families better.

Are chore apps worth it?

A chore app helps if you treat it as scaffolding rather than a fix. The apps that keep working past the first few weeks are the ones that make progress visible to the child and make the parent's job easier to stay consistent with, because consistency, not the app, is what actually builds habits. An app that only tracks compliance tends to fade the way a paper sticker chart does. So: worth it when it lowers the nagging and helps a routine stick; not worth it if it just moves the chart onto a screen.
