The "Bribery" Question Every Parent Asks
The moment you mention a reward system for kids, someone will say it, or at least consider saying it. Maybe it's a friend, a parenting book, or the voice in your own head: "Isn't that just bribery?" It's a fair concern. Nobody wants to raise a child who only does the right thing when there's candy or a sticker on the table.
But here's what the psychology actually shows: points and rewards, used thoughtfully, aren't the opposite of genuine motivation. They can be a bridge to it. The key is understanding what's happening in your child's brain, and what you're really trying to build.
What the Marshmallow Experiment Taught Us About Kids and Rewards
You've most likely heard of Walter Mischel's marshmallow experiment. A child is left alone with a marshmallow and a simple deal: wait fifteen minutes without eating it, and you'll get two. The fascinating part wasn't just who waited, it was how they waited.
The children who succeeded didn't just have stronger willpower. They used strategies: looking away, singing to themselves, mentally recasting the marshmallow as a picture rather than food. They made the wait feel manageable. Subsequent research has reinforced that delayed gratification is a skill, not a fixed trait. And like any skill, it develops with real practice and the right conditions. It also depends on something outside the child: kids wait far longer when they trust the second marshmallow will actually arrive, which is partly why the test turns out to say less about willpower than we assumed.
This right here is where a points system quietly does its best work. Earning points for daily tasks gives children a real, visible representation of progress toward something they want. A distant reward becomes concrete, so the wait is easier to handle. The wait becomes a game they understand. You're not bypassing their self-control; instead, you're giving it something to grip onto.
Practical tip: Keep the goal visible at all times. A simple chart on the fridge showing how many points your child has and how many they need makes the abstract feel achievable and keeps motivation alive between milestones.
The Bribery Problem: Why Points Are Different
There's truth to the bribery worry, but it's about how rewards get used, not rewards themselves. Bribery is reactive: offering a treat to stop a tantrum or skip a struggle, but unfortunately it teaches children that difficult feelings are something to be bought off, and that the reward is the only reason to act.
A structured points system is the opposite. It's proactive, consistent, and transparent. Your child knows before they start what tasks earn points, what those points are worth, and what they're working toward. That shifts the dynamic entirely. Instead of "do this or I'll take something away," it's "here's how effort connects to outcomes", which is a fairly accurate map of adult life. (It is also why paying kids for chores is really a question about what the reward teaches.)
Psychologists distinguish between controlling rewards ("do this, or else") and informational rewards ("this tells you that you did something well"). Controlling rewards erode intrinsic motivation, and informational rewards, paired with genuine acknowledgement, can strengthen it. The difference often comes down to how you talk about the system, not the system itself.
Practical tip: When your child completes a task, pair the points with specific praise. "You remembered to do that without being reminded, that's a big deal" lands very differently than silently marking a chart.
Now, The Real Question: Why Points Beat Stickers?
Sticker charts are the most common reward system parents try first, and often the first to fizzle out. And the reason for that goes deeper than kids simply getting bored.
Sticker charts are all or nothing: you did the task, you get a sticker. There's no sense of how much effort something took. Cleaning your room and putting a glass in the dishwasher earn the same single sticker. For children developing a sense of fairness and proportion, which is most of the 6–14 range, that feels wrong, even if they can't articulate why.
Points solve this naturally. A harder task earns more. A streak of consistent effort earns bonus recognition. The system communicates what stickers can't: how much your effort matters, not just that it happened.
There's also a structural problem with stickers. A sticker chart is a countdown: fill every box, get the prize. Once it's done, motivation resets to zero. Points, by contrast, are cumulative and open-ended. Your child's balance carries forward. Progress is never lost. That's what turns a short experiment into a lasting habit.
Practical tip: If your child is used to sticker charts, don't dismiss what they learned. Transition the system rather than replace it. The habits they started building still count, and a points system just gives those habits room to grow.
Self-Determination Theory: The Real Goal Behind the Points
In the 1980s, psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan developed Self-Determination Theory, and it remains one of the most robust frameworks for understanding human motivation. Their research identified three core needs that drive genuine, lasting motivation in both children and adults: autonomy (feeling like you have a choice), competence (feeling effective and capable), and relatedness (feeling connected to others).
When a reward system is designed well, it can quietly feed all three.
- Autonomy: Letting children choose which tasks to tackle first, or which reward to work toward, gives them ownership of the process.
- Competence: Watching points accumulate is visible proof that effort works. For children who struggle with confidence, this feedback loop can be transformative.
- Relatedness: When parents engage with the system (noticing progress, celebrating milestones), the shared experience strengthens connection.
The goal was never to keep your child motivated by points forever. The goal is to use that system-provided external structure to help them experience the satisfaction of doing hard things, and to let that feeling gradually become its own reward.
Practical tip: As your child gets older, involve them in setting the tasks and rewards. Children aged 10 and up especially benefit from having a voice in the system. It shifts them from just going along with the system to helping run it.
When Reward Systems Stop Working (And What to Do)
Even a good system can go stale. If your child stops caring about points, it's usually one of a few things: the rewards aren't meaningful enough, the tasks feel too easy or too hard, or the system has become invisible background noise.
Refreshing a reward system doesn't mean scrapping it. It might mean:
- Sitting down with your child and updating the reward options together
- Adjusting task difficulty so there's still a sense of challenge and achievement
- Adding a short-term goal alongside a longer one so wins happen more frequently
- Talking openly about how the system is working. Kids often have better instincts about this than we expect
Practical tip: Schedule a monthly "review" with your child: five minutes to look at what's working and what they'd like to change. It builds 'meta-awareness' and keeps the system theirs, not just yours.
Points as a Starting Line, Not a Finish Line
The research is clear that the kind of intrinsic motivation that doesn't need a reward attached, is the gold standard. Children who really are invested in doing well, being helpful, and rising to challenges will carry those qualities into adulthood. No argument there.
However, intrinsic motivation doesn't appear on its own. It grows from repeated experiences of effort, competence, and satisfaction. A thoughtful points system gives children a structured way to have those experiences, especially at the younger end of that range, when abstract future benefits still feel impossibly far away.
The marshmallow study, Self-Determination Theory, decades of classroom research all point in the same direction. Well done external support creates the conditions for internal growth. You really aren't building a child who needs a reward to do the right thing. You're building a child who gradually discovers they can.
